In an article from Harvard Business Publishing I found this piece of advice when you leave an organization if you were asked to:
Begin your next chapter. The best way to prove your worth is to move on to your next accomplishment. Let your future success speak for itself.
Don’t burn any bridges. It’s a small world out there. The person you trashed at your last company could easily show up at another one with job openings.
Swallow hard if you must. An exit interview isn’t an excuse to air your long-held grievances. Leave on good terms. Remember that in business it seldom matters who is right. What matters more is who maintains dignity and respect.
Probably the most important is the first piece of advice but I think we should add a few to this list:
Don’t leave behind unfinished business. Finnish what you have started or if you cannot find people that can do this for you.
Thank the people that helped you. It’s a small world so there is a high probability that you will meet again.
